About The Key Alliance
The Key Alliance is the 501 (c) 3 nonprofit fundraising arm of the Metropolitan Homelessness Commission and was created in 2009. The goal of The Key Alliance is to bring advocates, nonprofit organizations, for-profit business leaders, the faith-based community, government agencies, and the general public together to end chronic homelessness and reduce overall homelessness in Nashville.
The main program promoted by The Key Alliance is Housing First, which is a cost-effective and proven solution to chronic homelessness that is being implemented across the United States. Housing First can be accomplished without building new housing stock. Nashville has enough existing housing inventory which allows us to partner with property managers, developers and landlords to lease low-income rental units.
The Housing First model has three significant components:
- Access to permanent housing;
- Intensive and comprehensive case management by a team of master’s level social workers who are available to the client 24/7; and
- Acceptance of homeless clients who have been rejected by other programs.
The Key Alliance works hand in hand with the Metropolitan Homelessness Commission to implement the city's 10 Year Plan.
Events
The Key Alliance has three signature annual events where we invite the media to attend:
Project Homeless Connect. PHC is a one-day, one-stop event that provides people experiencing homelessness with access to a broad range of services including medical and foot care, legal services, employment assistance, pet care, food, shoes, haircuts and much more. Participants are either homeless or at the brink of homelessness and receive assistance with obtaining identification, filling out applications for housing opportunities and contacting lost family members. The overall goal of PHC is to link people in need with service providers and remove barriers to housing.
Walk A Mile in My Shoes. Usually held in spring, the walk is a fundraising and awareness campaign that gives participants first-hand knowledge about the difficult journey a homeless person travels once he or she finds him/herself on the street.
In 2011, a 5K run will be added to highlight the distance and paths a homeless individuals must walk to receive daily services such as food, showers, laundry, clothing, and health care.
Poster Contest. This annual awareness campaign invites 4th graders of a select school within the Metropolitan Nashville Public School (MNPS) system to draw a poster and share their thoughts about what "home" means to them. The contest is conducted in partnership with MNPS's H.E.R.O. Program, which works with homeless families in the public school system. During the school year of 2009-2010, MNPS registered 2,077 homeless children.
